About the role

  • Advanced underwriting director assessing medical and financial risk for Sun Life, a Canadian insurer. Negotiating high-value decisions with reinsurers and mentoring underwriters.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze insurance applications and evidence of insurability
  • Apply holistic underwriting expertise across medical, financial, and lifestyle factors
  • Make sound and competitive underwriting decisions
  • Negotiate decisions with reinsurers in accordance with reinsurance treaties and internal rules
  • Communicate and explain decisions to advisors and Clients’ physicians as required
  • Build relationships with business leaders, distribution teams, and advisors
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities and recommend solutions
  • Contribute to teamwork, innovation, and professional development
  • Attend regular High Net Worth case reviews to share knowledge and support team development
  • Provide mentorship to other underwriters
  • Report to the Chief Underwriter and Claims Risk Officer
  • Participate in some travel and representation at industry and sales events

Requirements

  • Decision-making authority exceeding $10,000,000 for Life and $1,000,000 for Critical Illness
  • Exceptional analytical, judgement, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Client and results focus with proactive service orientation
  • Strong knowledge of medical and financial risk factors
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines, and balance competing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal and external partners
  • 10–15 years of experience as an Individual Life Underwriter
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • ALU certificate and commitment to ongoing education toward FALU and FLMI designations
  • Bilingual oral and written French and English required only in Quebec
  • Willingness to undertake some travel and represent the company at industry and sales events
