About the role

  • Law Clerk supporting TD Insurance lawyers with Canadian civil litigation, personal injury, and accident-benefit matters. Preparing legal documents, discovery files, undertakings, expert briefs, and motions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist lawyers handling P & C Insurance Legal Matters involving civil litigation and no-fault/accident benefits matters
  • Review and analyze new file assignments and organize file contents
  • Prepare summary memoranda of medical, investigation, and documentary productions
  • Update electronic systems with relevant work completed on files
  • Prepare affidavits of documents for lawyer review
  • Arrange and manage undertakings charts
  • Organize and prepare files for discovery/questioning
  • Follow up on undertakings and production requests
  • Prepare document briefs for expert reviews
  • Draft motions
  • Remain current with developments in the law
  • Understand medical, scientific, construction, product liability, and engineering issues and defences

Requirements

  • Paralegal/Law Clerk diploma or certificate from a recognized educational institution, or equivalent work experience at a reputable law firm or legal department
  • 1–5 years of paralegal/law clerk experience or equivalent
  • Background in insurance defence litigation, including personal injury and accident benefit claims, preferred
  • General litigation experience
  • Knowledge of legal and court documents and procedures
  • Knowledge of standard office equipment and word processing
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Ability to communicate effectively with insured clients, claims representatives, and court/tribunal staff
  • Excellent legal drafting skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work productively under pressure and deliver business results
  • Strong interpersonal and client service skills
  • Superior organization and priority-setting skills
  • Strong work ethic and ability to multitask
  • Conceptual and creative problem-solving skills
