About the role
- Senior Backend Engineer building scalable Java/Kotlin services for Toast’s restaurant reservations and payments platform. Delivering integrations, subscriptions, and guest-management capabilities across global markets.
Responsibilities
- Architect, implement, and scale distributed backend microservices using Java, Kotlin, and AWS for reservations and guest management
- Build core transactional and payment capabilities
- Design integrations with third-party aggregators and partners, including two-way POS synchronization
- Implement tiering, entitlements, and usage metering services across freemium waitlists and premium subscription tiers
- Partner with Mobile, Web/Frontend, Product Management, and UX teams to deliver end-to-end features
- Drive code quality, observability, test automation, and operational excellence
- Mentor team members and participate in technical design reviews
- Use modern AI development workflows to accelerate velocity and code quality
Requirements
- 5+ years of software engineering experience building scalable, distributed backend microservices in production
- Deep proficiency in Java or Kotlin
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including PostgreSQL and DynamoDB
- Experience with event-driven architectures, including Pulsar, Kafka, or AWS
- Experience designing clean, versioned REST or GraphQL APIs
- Experience handling asynchronous workflows at scale
- Experience integrating payment workflows, such as card tokenization, pre-authorization, Stripe, Adyen, or payment gateways, or compliance-sensitive systems
- Strong focus on software reliability, schema design, latency optimization, and distributed systems resilience
- Ability to collaborate across distributed global time zones with a single-threaded ownership mindset
