Backend engineer building Java/Kotlin microservices for Toast’s restaurant platform. Developing reservations, payments, guest workflows, and integrations for international markets.
Responsibilities
Build, test, and deploy scalable backend microservices using Java/Kotlin and AWS infrastructure
Implement reservation and guest lifecycle APIs, including international phone validation, geoblocking rules, and two-way notification services
Develop transactional and payment components for reservations, pre-authorizations, and card workflows
Build data synchronization endpoints and event consumers connecting with POS order data, fulfillment, and Guestbook profiles
Write automated unit, integration, and contract tests
Monitor service health and analyze logs and metrics using Datadog and CloudWatch
Participate in on-call rotations to maintain platform uptime
Collaborate in agile ceremonies, code reviews, and technical design discussions
Work with senior engineers, product managers, designers, and mobile/web teammates across North America and Europe
Requirements
2–4 years of professional backend software development experience building RESTful APIs and distributed systems in production
Proficiency in Java or Kotlin, or similar object-oriented languages such as C#
Familiarity with modern frameworks such as Spring Boot, Micronaut, or Dropwizard
Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
Ability to write efficient SQL queries and schema migrations
Familiarity with distributed systems concepts
Familiarity with asynchronous messaging such as Kafka, Pulsar, or AWS SQS/SNS
Familiarity with AWS cloud platforms
Understanding of RESTful API design principles and JSON data modeling
Experience with testing best practices, including JUnit and Mockito
Strong problem-solving skills
Curiosity to learn restaurant domain workflows
