Marine Engineer responsible for the operation and maintenance of diesel engines and mechanical systems on vessels. Ensuring compliance with safety regulations while working shifts on the ferry.
Responsibilities
Operates and maintains diesel engines and related mechanical and electrical equipment such as marine hoisting equipment on vessels in a safe, efficient and environmentally-friendly manner.
Inspects and effects repairs to all diesel and gasoline powered machinery and equipment.
Advises Marine Engineer 1 when shutdown of engines and equipment is necessary or makes independent decision to shut down engines/equipment when at sea or when Marine Engineer 1 is off duty.
Dismantles, cleans, repairs, overhauls, replaces and/or maintains diesel and gasoline powered engines and equipment as assigned.
Inspects and monitors air control systems, hydraulic systems, transmissions, steering gears, etc.
Checks the physical integrity of the hull and ensures the vessel is water tight.
Conducts minor repairs.
Prepares the vessels for winterizing and dry-docking.
Monitors the levels of all bilge water tanks, sewage tanks, fuel tanks, etc.
Prepares the vessels machinery and safety equipment for inspections and sea trials in accordance with the requirements of Transport Canada Marine Machinery and Safety Regulations.
Carries out security checks to prevent infiltration and sabotage of the vital and most vulnerable compartments of the ferry and of all machinery and below deck compartments in accordance with MARSEC regulations.
Conducts periodical rounds to ensure the safe operation of the engine room, all machinery and the integrity of the hull and informs the Captain of any safety related issue.
Performs a variety of skilled work not requiring the services of other licensed trades including, but not limited to, minor welding repairs, pipe fitting on plumbing systems, and repairs to vessels electrical/lighting system and public address system.
Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
Conducts bunkering of diesel fuel.
Performs engine lubricating and changing of transmission oils, hydraulic oils etc.
Receives and stocks essential consumable and machinery parts on board the vessel.
Performs minor mechanical maintenance work on marine plant.
Oversees, coordinates, monitors and provides shipboard assistance and records the details of any maintenance and repair work carried out by independent technicians, tradesmen and contractors.
Checks, maintains and updates the Engine Room Log Book.
May be required to provide work direction and training to other staff.
Checks and maintains all Emergency & Safety equipment and ensures appropriate action is taken in emergencies.
Initiates machine space emergency contingency procedures as the engineer on board in charge of engine room machinery, according to Marine Personnel Regulations, and assists with onboard emergency contingency procedures.
Keeps the Captain informed.
Performs related duties at this wage grade level or lower.
Requirements
Must possess and be able to maintain a Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO) licence/certificate of a motor driven vessel in accordance with the regulations enforced by Transport Canada.
Proven experience in operation/maintenance of a marine vessel.
Must possess and be willing to maintain a valid Marine Medical Certificate of Fitness and a Marine Basic First Aid Certificate as per Transport Canada Regulations.
Extensive experience in the operation and maintenance of marine engine room equipments, including hoisting equipment.
Ability to provide work direction and training to others.
Ability to deal courteously with public.
Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Marine Occupational Health & Safety Act and other the regulations that apply to this work.
Must be physically capable of performing required duties.
Must be available to work shift/weekend/overtime/on call duty.
Must be able to work under adverse weather conditions, i.e. winter Ferry operations.
