About the role

  • Ecological Field Coordinator leading biodiversity and restoration monitoring across Alberta for the University of Alberta. Coordinating field crews, logistics, data quality, equipment, and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Lead field crews delivering biodiversity monitoring and restoration monitoring activities across Alberta.
  • Coordinate daily field operations for assigned monitoring projects.
  • Organize field schedules, travel, accommodations, vehicles, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ensure field activities are completed safely, efficiently, and according to project schedules.
  • Participate in field monitoring and data collection as required.
  • Identify and resolve day-to-day operational issues during field activities.
  • Supervise seasonal field technicians and provide instruction on monitoring protocols, equipment use, and safe work procedures.
  • Assign daily work, monitor performance, and provide coaching and feedback.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and training of seasonal staff.
  • Promote a safe, respectful, and productive field work environment.
  • Ensure monitoring protocols and quality assurance procedures are consistently implemented.
  • Review field data for completeness and accuracy before submission.
  • Maintain field equipment, vehicles, and technical supplies.
  • Assist with testing and implementation of new field equipment and technologies.
  • Identify opportunities to improve field procedures and operational efficiency.
  • Assist with annual field planning and logistics.
  • Support preparation of field documentation, operational records, and technical summaries.
  • Maintain working relationships with landowners, Indigenous communities, contractors, and project partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum two years of experience conducting ecological field work or environmental monitoring.
  • Equivalencies in education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience coordinating field crews or leading field activities.
  • Experience working safely in remote field environments.
  • Knowledge of ecological sampling methods and field data collection.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must possess a valid Alberta Class 5 (non-GDL) driver’s license.
  • Able to provide a recent copy of a three-year driver’s abstract with no more than six demerits and/or two moving violations within the last two years.
