About the role

  • Senior Director overseeing merchant underwriting, boarding, and fraud monitoring for Versapay’s B2B payments platform. Modernizing risk operations with automation, AI, and AR data.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day merchant boarding, underwriting, and risk operations for Versapay’s B2B payments platform
  • Lead a team of underwriters, risk analysts, and boarding specialists supporting payments and lending applications
  • Redesign the boarding journey using AI-first workflows, straight-through approval, intelligent exception triage, and human review
  • Define and operationalize risk appetite, credit policy, exposure limits, approval guardrails, exception review, delegated authority workflows, escalation thresholds, and monthly reporting
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Compliance, Finance, Sales, vendors, processors, and sponsor banks on policies, workflows, integrations, reporting, audits, and regulatory readiness
  • Improve the KYB/KYC, beneficial ownership, sanctions/PEP screening, fraud, bank/transaction data, and decision orchestration technology stack
  • Implement automation and AI-assisted document review with reviewable, auditable outputs and human decision workflows
  • Maintain automated-decision controls, documentation, override tracking, quality assurance, and performance reviews
  • Build the underwriting operating model for future embedded lending products
  • Partner with Finance on portfolio performance, loss forecasting, vintage analysis, reserve modeling, pricing inputs, and lending economics
  • Establish servicing-side risk controls, early-warning triggers, collections strategy, and loss mitigation
  • Own ongoing merchant monitoring, transaction surveillance, chargeback and return analytics, anomaly detection, fraud indicators, ACH-return trends, and credit deterioration monitoring
  • Build executive and sponsor-bank exposure dashboards and lead response protocols for high-severity risk events
  • Ensure compliance with NACHA, BSA/AML, OFAC, card brand rules, state lending laws, and sponsor bank requirements
  • Build, coach, and scale teams across underwriting, boarding operations, risk analytics, and portfolio monitoring
  • Translate risk strategy into measurable SLAs and KPIs

Requirements

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in payments risk, merchant underwriting, boarding operations, credit risk, or financial services operations, with at least 3+ years leading teams or major operational workstreams
  • Deep knowledge of merchant underwriting: KYB/KYC, beneficial ownership, financial statement review, exposure modelling, MCC/industry risk, chargeback economics
  • Proven track record modernizing legacy boarding processes through automated decisioning, vendor orchestration, and straight-through processing
  • Hands-on familiarity with modern risk and verification vendors
  • Working knowledge of card brand rules, NACHA, BSA/AML, OFAC, and sponsor bank operating requirements
  • Experience operating in major card processor and sponsor bank environments
  • Fluency in SQL and ability to interrogate model outputs and challenge analyst conclusions
  • Ability to use alternative data signals, including AR/invoice data, payer behaviour, accounting-system data, or transaction flows
  • Pragmatic approach to automation and AI with auditable decisions and appropriate human oversight
  • Strong communication skills with senior stakeholders
  • Prior lending exposure preferred, particularly in small business lending, working capital, MCA, factoring, term loans, or embedded finance
  • Experience supporting the launch or operational scaling of a lending, credit, or embedded-finance product preferred
  • Familiarity with AI/ML risk decisioning platforms and LLM-based document review tooling preferred
  • Background in B2B/accounts receivable payments, embedded finance, or vertical SaaS preferred
  • Exposure to model risk management frameworks preferred
  • Experience navigating sponsor bank audits and regulatory exams preferred
  • Working understanding of lending economics preferred
  • Experience operating across multiple jurisdictions, including U.S. and Canadian payments or lending requirements preferred
