About the role
- Senior backend engineer building capacity models and scalable distributed systems for Affirm's buy-now-pay-later platform. Leading engineers through quarterly goals, availability, and infrastructure planning.
Responsibilities
- Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team
- Lead engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems
- Support peers and stakeholders throughout the product development lifecycle
- Collaborate with product management, design and analytics on ideation and technical decisions
- Identify, advocate for and lead resolution of project, process, technology and business issues
- Support operations and availability of team artifacts through metrics, escalation and on-call efforts
- Establish and improve code review and design standards
- Advocate for engineering standards through writing and tech talks
- Develop team talent through feedback, guidance and leading by example
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale
- Experience using languages such as Python or Kotlin
- Track record developing highly available distributed systems
- Experience with AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes
- Experience supporting scale up and down of large-scale sales events
- Experience tuning autoscaling, CPU/memory and multi-threading for compute workloads
- Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components
- Ability to write high-quality, understandable and reusable code
- Proficiency making significant changes in a large codebase safely
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field
