About the role
- Bridge Design Lead managing freight and passenger rail bridge design, rehabilitation, and construction support. Delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions for public and private clients at Arcadis.
Responsibilities
- Manage and deliver multidisciplinary bridge analysis, rehabilitation, and design projects from planning through detailed design and construction
- Produce, supervise, and manage engineering design products for freight rail bridge rehabilitation, replacement, and new design projects
- Lead teams in defining design criteria, work scope, budgets, schedules, work plans, and technical direction
- Prepare and check engineering calculations, structural analysis models, drawings, specifications, quantities, cost estimates, and technical reports
- Develop design concepts and evaluate rehabilitation and replacement options
- Prepare procurement documents, design packages, proposals, and technical analyses covering rail loading, fatigue, member capacity, substructure performance, staging, and constructability
- Provide construction-phase engineering services, including reviewing shop drawings and contractor submissions, responding to RFIs, and coordinating disciplines
- Assess existing complex freight rail bridges and rail-related structures
- Lead technical investigations with inspection teams and specialized sub-consultants
- Recommend strengthening, renewal, and replacement strategies
- Complete life cycle cost analyses
- Lead project pursuits, budget estimates, staffing assessments, and proposal writing
- Assemble and manage project teams, control budgets and schedules, and ensure deliverable quality
- Maintain client relationships and manage financial reporting
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and railway-specific regulations
- Provide technical guidance to CAD Designer/Drafters, Designers, and less experienced engineers
- Support team growth and development across multiple freight rail bridge design projects
Requirements
- 4-year degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution
- 10+ years progressive rail bridge engineering design experience
- Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and collaborative skills
- Ability to provide effective technical mentoring to less experienced engineers
- Must be a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario, Alberta or BC
- Technical knowledge of bridge engineering design and analysis principles
- Excellent technical report writing experience and skills
- Proficiency in 3D modelling analysis software (CSI Bridge or MIDAS Civil) is a must
