About the role
- Senior/Lead Software Engineer developing Arista’s Linux-based EOS networking software. Building, testing, and debugging routing and packet-forwarding features for large data center networks.
Responsibilities
- Join Arista Networks’ Extensible Operating System (EOS) software development team
- Build features for large data center networks
- Develop software for Arista’s Linux-based EOS network operating system running on data center networking products
- Gather and understand functional and technical requirements with fellow engineers and marketing team members
- Write functional specifications, design specifications, and test plans
- Implement software features in C, C++, and Python
- Create and execute automated tests
- Debug and fix issues found by automated tests
- Work on routing protocol problems with a software team
- Analyze customer-network problems with Customer Support Engineers and provide software releases or patches
- Analyze System Test Engineer findings and provide fixes
- Mentor new and junior engineers
- Review and contribute to team specifications and implementations
- Create and maintain implementation and debugging schedules and report weekly to the project lead
- Own projects from definition through deployment and ensure delivery quality
Requirements
- BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering plus 8 years of experience, or MS plus 6 years, or Ph.D. plus 3 years, or equivalent work experience
- Knowledge of C, C++, and/or Python
- Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
- Understanding of L2/L3 networking
- Knowledge of IP routing protocols such as RIP, OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, or PIM is desirable
- Knowledge of Layer 2 features such as 802.1d bridging, Spanning Tree Protocol, LACP, LLDP, or RFC 1812 IP routing is desirable
- Ability to utilize, test, and debug packet forwarding engines and vendor-provided hardware component software libraries
- Knowledge of distributed-systems infrastructure functions, including messaging, signalling, databases, and command-line interface techniques
- Hands-on experience designing and developing Ethernet bridging, routing-related, or distributed-systems software is desirable
- Hands-on experience with enterprise or service-provider Ethernet switch/router system software development, or significant PhD-level research in network routing and packet forwarding
- Applied understanding of software engineering principles
- Strong software troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to independently design and implement solutions to small-sized problems
- Ability to work on a small team solving medium-sized problems with limited oversight
