About the role

  • Specialist in geographic information systems analyzing geospatial data for insurance pricing and risk management. Collaborating with data science and underwriting teams at Aviva Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, process and analyze complex geospatial datasets related to insurance activities, and translate them into actionable recommendations to support pricing, underwriting and product strategies.
  • Create high-quality maps, dashboards and visualizations for business partners.
  • Support spatial risk assessments, catastrophe modeling and exposure analyses.
  • Effectively communicate model results and findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborate closely with business and engineering teams to improve geospatial modeling tools and integrate them into operations.
  • Contribute to innovation and the continuous improvement of geospatial and analytical data usage.
  • Stay up to date with technological advances and GIS best practices.

Requirements

  • University degree in geography, geomatics (GIS), data science, mathematics, physics or a related field (Master’s degree considered an asset).
  • Proficiency in English required, including excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in GIS analysis, including use of QGIS, GeoServer, Postgres/PostGIS, and working with large datasets (industry or academic settings).
  • Proficiency in Python and strong software engineering practices (modularity, code reuse, documentation).
  • Excellent analytical skills and a strong interest in geospatial applications for insurance pricing.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
  • Collaborative mindset, intellectual curiosity and a desire to contribute to a high-performing team.
  • Knowledge of flood modeling and open-source GIS tools (asset).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and CI/CD tools (asset).
  • Knowledge of advanced machine learning and optimization techniques (asset).
  • Experience in the insurance or financial services sector (asset).
