About the role

  • Senior Hardware Engineer leading sustaining engineering of hardware-based products at Blackline Safety. Responsible for electrical design, problem solving, and cross-functional team collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Circuit design to improve, maintain, and modify existing products from the design concept stage, design, verification, Intrinsic Safety (IS) certification, regulatory and ultimately production release
  • Develop an expert level understanding of Intrinsic Safety (IS) certification for explosive atmospheres
  • Triage electrical and system-level performance issues in manufacturing and the field; lead root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Collaborate closely with firmware engineers on HW/FW integration and system-level problem solving
  • Work with manufacturing and test engineering to ensure robust, high-volume production
  • Support product validation and Design Quality teams to maintain product reliability and compliance
  • Provide regular schedule, risk, and status updates to product and engineering leadership
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and interns
  • Minimal travel may be required

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or equivalent education and experience
  • 5+ years of industry experience designing high-volume consumer or industrial electronic products
  • Strong EE fundamentals with hands-on experience in prototype bring-up, debugging, and functional verification
  • Experience with schematic capture and layout of HDI, multi-layer PCB designs (Altium Designer preferred)
  • Strong background in power systems, including SMPS, LDOs, PDN design, and battery-powered optimization
  • Experience with low- and high-speed digital interfaces (I²C, UART, SPI, USB, etc.) and signal integrity fundamentals
  • Proficient with standard lab equipment: oscilloscopes, logic/protocol analyzers, JTAG debuggers, DMMs, power supplies
  • Demonstrated ability to independently drive complex technical problems to resolution
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and mentoring skills
  • Bonus points for:
  • Experience with wireless technologies: cellular, GNSS, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, NFC
  • Experience with C/C++ or Python for test, debug, or analysis
  • Familiarity with simulation tools (LTspice, PowerDC/SI, etc.)
  • Experience with gas detection or safety-critical products
  • EMC compliance design and troubleshooting experience
  • Experience with intrinsically safe product design and certification
  • P.Eng. (APEGA) licensure or eligibility to practice in Alberta
