About the role

  • Development Scientist I (analytical focus) at Canadian Blood Services supporting blood components and processes development. Work includes laboratory assays, data analysis, and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development, optimization, and characterization of analytical assays used to characterize blood and blood products
  • Conduct complex laboratory assays and ensure accurate documentation of experimental activities and results
  • Support development studies, including laboratory testing, data collection, analysis, and reporting
  • Review, analyze, and interpret data, identify potential issues, and contribute to troubleshooting activities
  • May assist with assay execution and other enabling work that supports development projects
  • Conduct literature reviews and summarize scientific evidence relevant to assays and analytical techniques used in blood product and process development
  • Prepare standard operating procedures, work instructions, technical reports, presentations, and other scientific documentation
  • Present findings to project teams and internal stakeholders in a clear and concise manner
  • Troubleshoot and support investigations related to analytical methods, working under the guidance of senior scientists
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders and contribute to a positive team environment
  • Work independently as well as a part of a large development project team, as determined by project needs
  • May contribute to national and international visibility of Canadian Blood Services development work by contributing to manuscript preparation for journal submission, or preparing and submitting abstracts to, and presenting posters and oral abstracts at, local, national and international blood industry conferences

Requirements

  • PhD degree in a relevant scientific discipline, or a Master's degree with at least 3 year’s of research and development experience (preferably in assay development in blood component manufacturing or a related regulated industry)
  • Strong knowledge of blood products, biologics or related fields and the analytical techniques in these fields
  • Experience with some of the following analytical techniques: Flow cytometry, ELISA or other plate-based assays, Enzymatic assays, Coagulation or aggregation testing, Cell morphology or microscopy-based assays, Ektacytometry, Protein characterization techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of experimental design, assay characterization and qualification, data collection, and data analysis
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate scientific information clearly
  • Experience with preparing work instructions/standard operating procedures
  • Understanding of good manufacturing practice and good documentation practice
  • Experience with product or process development in a regulated environment is considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
