About the role

  • Payment Specialist calculating and processing disability and life benefits for Alberta Blue Cross. Managing overpayments, tax reporting, financial balancing, and confidential claimant information.

Responsibilities

  • Calculate and process Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability, and Life payments according to contract terms
  • Apply CPP adjustments, offsets for other earnings, and interest adjustments
  • Ensure Life and Disability payments are assessed, approved, and documented by an authorized Case Manager or other approver before release
  • Process lump sum payments, recurring disability payments, and payment updates
  • Prioritize and maintain workload to meet turnaround standards and support a positive customer experience
  • Maintain accuracy in calculation and management of benefit payments
  • Manage sensitive and confidential customer information
  • Validate internal approval limits and pre-disability salary amounts
  • Identify and address direct deposit information concerns and errors
  • Respond to payment amount questions from claimants and plan sponsors/brokers
  • Track and manage benefit overpayments, including maintaining tracking spreadsheets and managing settlement communications
  • Follow up on outstanding accounts and apply voids, adjustments, or overpayment amounts
  • Forward incoming funds to the Accounting department
  • Assist with monthly discrepancy and year-end financial balancing
  • Prepare and review T4 and T4A reports and complete year-end tax-related processes
  • Review and update COLA and tax adjustments at year end
  • Act as designated contact between Alberta Blue Cross and Service Canada for Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits

Requirements

  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma or certificate program in a related field, which may include payroll or disability payment calculation
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant work experience
  • Proven ability to use technology tools and easily learn new software applications
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet search tools
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Commitment and passion to excel in delivering a superior customer experience
  • High level of personal accountability and professionalism
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, listening, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public, peers, coworkers, and in a team environment
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to manage changing priorities, maintain confidentiality, work independently with minimal supervision, and meet deadlines
  • Satisfactory criminal record check required as a condition of employment following a conditional offer
