About the role
- Director leading enterprise data governance, catalog, quality, and AI readiness for CBC/Radio-Canada’s public service media organization. Hybrid role guiding governance programs, councils, stakeholders, and data teams.
Responsibilities
- Develop, refine, and enforce enterprise-wide data governance policies, directives, and standards aligned with corporate priorities
- Establish data classification rules, access controls, and compliance monitoring with Legal, InfoSec, and Data Engineering
- Define core data concepts and maintain central governance documentation and artifacts
- Oversee implementation of an enterprise data catalog and metadata management processes
- Establish an enterprise data quality program and implement data lineage tracking
- Partner with technology and analytics teams to prepare clean, structured data for BI, reporting, and AI/ML models
- Manage the Enterprise Data Governance Steering Committee
- Lead the Enterprise Data Council and translate strategic directives into policies and actionable initiatives
- Build cross-functional networks of data stewards, owners, custodians, and working groups
- Lead change management, training, and communication programs to improve data literacy
- Influence senior executives and business stakeholders to adopt governance practices
- Build, mentor, and lead a small, high-impact data governance team
- Define, track, and report governance KPIs, including data quality, issue resolution, policy compliance, and user adoption
- Build and maintain executive dashboards reporting program progress and outcomes to leadership
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in data management, governance, or a related field
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- Proven experience building and launching enterprise data governance programs
- Experience leading enterprise-grade data catalog / data governance tooling initiatives
- Experience developing and managing a business glossary
- Experience operating in a national, matrixed organization
- Bilingualism (English and French)
- Strong hands-on experience with SQL, data modeling, structured/unstructured data governance, and ETL/ELT logic
- Proficiency with Python, Jira, and workflow mapping tools is a key asset
- Hands-on experience integrating and/or heavily using enterprise data governance tools such as Collibra, Alation, Informatica, or Purview
- Familiarity with major cloud-based data platforms such as Google Cloud Platform or Azure
- Proven track record building and validating data lineage, managing data quality validation/remediation, and creating or overseeing automated scripts for metadata harvesting and validation
- Deep understanding of modern data architectures, cloud data platforms, BI/analytics, and AI/ML pipelines
- Ability to collaborate across technical, product, vendor, and business teams
- Exceptional ability to translate complex technical, architectural, and regulatory concepts into clear, actionable business language
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and API-based metadata harvesting is a nice-to-have
- Ability to understand and communicate the value of data as an asset
- Ability to manage cross-functional teams
- Business and technical requirements documentation skills
- Strong project management and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and facilitation abilities
- Ability to lead by influence and work across teams and business units at varying levels of data governance maturity
