About the role

  • Operations Forester coordinating contractors, harvesting, road construction, and forest plans for Domtar’s Ontario woodlands. Field-based, camp-based role focused on safety, compliance, efficiency, and sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary field contact and liaison with contractor staff
  • Collaborate with staff, harvest, and road construction contractors to maximize operational efficiency and minimize cost
  • Coordinate with contractor staff and Planning Forester to obtain AWS information and prepare AWS submissions
  • Determine necessary FMP amendments and AWS revisions to sustain operations on licences
  • Comply with health, safety, and environmental standards
  • Ensure compliance with governmental and internal safety, environmental, and utilization standards
  • Monitor and approve Forest Operations Inspection Reports for harvest, access, and water crossings
  • Assist with departmental budgets and cost control systems
  • Assist in developing FMP and AWS operating and road plans
  • Participate in continuous improvement to maximize productivity
  • Reinforce quality specifications with employees and contractors
  • Monitor log quality to meet customer needs
  • Monitor compliance with Collective Agreements
  • Develop relationships with governmental, public agencies, and the public
  • Represent the company on the Local Citizen’s Committee
  • Maintain operational competence to provide vacation relief for the Operations Superintendent

Requirements

  • Bilingual in English and French is required
  • 3-5 years of proven operational harvesting and road building experience
  • A degree in Forestry with professional designation (or ability to achieve) or Forestry Technology with extensive operational or planning experience
  • Certified Compliance FOIP inspector accreditation or ability to attain
  • Excellent communication and teamwork
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Drive and passion to improve health and safety, efficiency, production, and planning targets
  • In-depth knowledge of MS Office
  • Reliable computer skills with knowledge of ESRI software, Avenza, and GPS
  • Strong attention to detail combined with ability to see the big picture
