About the role

  • Municipal Solicitor advising Hamilton’s Housing Secretariat on contracts, housing matters, and legal risk. Drafting agreements and supporting City Council and departments.

Responsibilities

  • Negotiate and draft contracts and agreements, including commercial and/or real estate agreements, on behalf of the municipality
  • Review and interpret contract language
  • Provide specialized legal services and consultation on housing-related matters and other contracts and agreements
  • Work with Senior Management, staff at all levels, and City Council on legal matters
  • Develop and implement proactive strategies to protect the City's interests and reduce legal risk
  • Provide research, analysis, counselling, and legal advice to City Council and City Departments
  • Review and prepare clear, concise, legally compliant documents, policies, and procedures
  • Provide legal opinions and advice on matters posing significant risks to the City
  • Participate in a preventative law program to preclude and remedy anticipated legal problems
  • Assist the City Solicitor, Deputy City Solicitor, and staff with service delivery
  • Comply with applicable Health and Safety legislation and City policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties directly related to the position's responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws degree or Juris Doctor (JD) from a recognized University
  • Membership in good standing in the Law Society of Ontario
  • Advanced knowledge and expertise normally attained through progressively more responsible practice
  • At least 3–5 years or more of experience negotiating and drafting commercial and/or real estate contracts and agreements
  • Experience with construction or infrastructure-related agreements is an asset
  • High level of professionalism and integrity
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and prioritize
  • Highly developed analytical and business planning skills
  • Effective leadership, facilitation, communication, presentation, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Highly developed ability to develop work plans and service level agreements
  • Computer skills in a Windows environment using MS Office software
