About the role
- Mining engineering co-op student supporting survey, drill-and-blast, planning, and data management at Hudbay Minerals’ open-pit mine. Hands-on role with a 7-on-7-off, 12-hour day-shift rotation.
Responsibilities
- Report to the Senior Mine Engineer, Technical Services
- Support Engineering and Operations teams as part of the technical services team
- Gain hands-on experience in survey, drill and blast, planning, and data management
- Practice safe work behaviours and support the Copper Mountain Mine safety culture
- Participate in daily and monthly safety meetings and initiatives
- Adhere to PPE requirements, company policies, procedures, and SOPs
- Assist with survey data collection, processing, and interpretation
- Assist in drill pattern design, blast planning, monitoring, and post-blast analysis
- Contribute to short-term planning, including design, scheduling, and data analysis
- Participate in field investigations, data collection, and operational improvement studies
- Perform quality assurance and quality control of collected data
- Prepare reports and summaries for stakeholders
- Work a 7-on-7-off rotation of 12-hour day shifts only
- Perform other responsibilities as required
Requirements
- Enrolled in a University degree in Mining Engineering and be a 2nd year or above student
- Open-pit mining experience is considered an asset
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
- Experience in SQL, Python, and Surpac are considered an asset
- Valid Class 5/7N British Columbia driver’s license
- Access to personal transportation
- Eligibility to work in Canada
- Confirmation of valid educational requirements
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to an ever-changing environment
- Ability to work under pressure and maintain calm focus to meet tight timelines
- Ability to work independently and as an effective team member
- Must meet pre-employment testing requirements
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including heavy lifting, awkward positions, walking, and standing
- Ability to repeatedly lift up to 50 lbs.
