About the role
- Principal Software Engineer shaping Jobber’s platform for small-business service providers. Driving mobile architecture, AI engineering, and organization-wide technical initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Drive platform strategy and solve problems not owned by a single team
- Identify emerging technical needs before they reach team roadmaps
- Make the case for initiatives to leadership and deliver working prototypes to implementation teams
- Understand customer workflows and design the platforms and roadmaps needed next
- Research emerging technologies, prototype approaches, and write design documents and findings
- Own technical decisions for organization-wide initiatives, documenting trade-offs and rationale from proposal through adoption
- Deliver high-quality, well-structured code
- Mentor engineers and raise engineering standards through example
- Build with agentic AI tools and advance Amplify and AI engineering practices across the organization
- Explain complex technical problems to leadership, product, and engineering audiences
- Extend offline support across the mobile app
- Replace third-party end-to-end testing with an in-house system
- Migrate the mobile app to Expo
- Scale agentic development through Amplify
- Collaborate on software used by tens of thousands of small-business users worldwide
Requirements
- Track record of driving technical initiatives across multiple teams
- Deep technical judgment in architecture, trade-off decisions, and code
- Strong front-end experience, particularly with React and TypeScript
- Hands-on fluency with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or Copilot
- Ability to plan and delegate work to AI agents, verify outputs, and refine workflows
- Clear technical writing, including RFCs, design documents, and architecture decision records
- Experience growing senior engineers through deliberate mentorship
- Production mobile experience, ideally React Native, or native iOS/Android depth (preferred, not required)
- Production experience with GraphQL or Ruby on Rails (preferred, not required)
- Must be based in Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver, or Kitchener-Waterloo
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Successful completion of a background check
