About the role

  • Principal Risk Engineer guiding energy and renewable portfolio risk for Liberty Mutual Canada, a commercial insurer. Leading assessments, loss prevention, underwriting advisory, and client risk strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead risk engineering strategy across energy and renewable energy portfolios
  • Manage complex energy accounts, including renewable energy, conventional power generation, battery energy storage systems, transmission and distribution infrastructure, and associated operations
  • Direct risk assessments and loss control services across first- and third-party lines
  • Provide technical recommendations to underwriting, claims, brokers, clients, owners, operators, contractors, and developers
  • Develop guidelines, white papers, training materials, and technical presentations
  • Build relationships with Underwriting, Claims, brokers, clients, and global Risk Engineering partners
  • Represent the organization in client meetings, broker engagements, project development discussions, and industry events
  • Mentor colleagues, underwriters, and peers
  • Conduct pre- and post-bind surveys, desktop analyses, engineering reviews, and onsite assessments
  • Evaluate operational risks across wind, solar, hydroelectric, gas-fired generation, battery storage, substations, transmission infrastructure, and emerging energy technologies
  • Assess fire, explosion, electrical, machinery breakdown, natural catastrophe, supply chain, cyber-physical, and business interruption exposures
  • Review engineering controls, reliability programs, maintenance practices, emergency response, and safety management systems
  • Advise Underwriting on risk quality, probable maximum loss, business interruption exposures, pricing, and terms
  • Develop site-specific mitigation strategies and risk improvement initiatives
  • Track recommendations and maintain accurate risk engineering data
  • Support claims through technical reviews, site visits, root cause analysis, and post-loss assessments
  • Participate in client meetings, project planning, strategic risk reviews, and growth and retention activities
  • Deliver reports, stewardship materials, and service plans
  • Analyze portfolio trends, loss drivers, emerging technologies, and service utilization
  • Enhance tools, processes, and service delivery models
  • Support adoption of remote monitoring, predictive analytics, condition monitoring, and resilience-based risk management
  • Monitor and communicate emerging risks affecting energy transition and renewable energy sectors
  • Contribute to speaking engagements, technical content, conferences, networking, training, and internal resources
  • Collaborate with underwriting and leadership on risk engineering and business strategy
  • Support underwriting guidelines and risk engineering standards for emerging energy technologies
  • Respond to complex operational incidents and loss events and coordinate recovery efforts
  • Take ownership of special projects aligned with business priorities

Requirements

  • 15+ years in energy, power generation, renewable energy, engineering consulting, risk engineering, property risk engineering, utility operations, or loss control/prevention environments
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical, chemical, civil, energy systems, or related discipline), mathematics, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • P.Eng. designation preferred
  • Additional certifications such as CPCU, CRM, ARM, CRE, CSP, CFPS, CIP, PMP, CMRP, or equivalent industry credentials are highly valued
  • Strong knowledge of renewable energy technologies, power generation systems, battery energy storage systems, electrical infrastructure, fire protection engineering, equipment reliability, and loss prevention strategies
  • Experience across Property, Energy, Renewable Energy, Machinery Breakdown, Construction, Casualty, Environmental, and Business Interruption lines strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to assess complex risks, think critically, and deliver practical, value-added solutions
  • Exceptional ability to present technical concepts clearly and effectively to diverse stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated success building trusted partnerships with internal teams, clients, brokers, owners, operators, developers, and consultants
  • Skills in leadership, planning, client service, training, and technical advisory roles
  • Advanced capability with Microsoft Office and risk/engineering systems
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Professional fluency in English and French is an asset
  • Ability to travel within Canada and the U.S. approximately 25–50%, typically around 30%
