About the role
- Quality Engineer automating web, API, and integration testing for Manulife Bank’s digital banking platform. Improving framework coverage, reliability, and CI/CD quality practices.
Responsibilities
- Build and evolve automated test frameworks for TypeScript/JavaScript frontend and Backend for Frontend layers
- Build automated coverage across functional, integration, regression, end-to-end, performance, accessibility, and reliability testing
- Use exploratory or manual testing where automation provides insufficient coverage or ROI
- Use AI tools to accelerate test authoring and coverage
- Validate REST APIs across BFF and backend service layers, including contracts, authentication flows, error handling, and integration points
- Identify, document, and resolve defects with developers
- Perform root cause analysis on test failures
- Support performance benchmarking, accessibility audits, security reviews, and EN/FR bilingual coverage
- Embed with agile squads from story refinement through release
- Write and refine acceptance criteria in Gherkin format and maintain risk-based test plans with traceable automated coverage
- Participate in code reviews and advocate for testability, quality engineering best practices, and shift-left principles
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, including PR gates, regression gates, and continuous feedback loops
- Support production monitoring and feature flag validation as shift-right practices mature
- Create and manage test data with awareness of masking and environment parity requirements
- Improve test efficiency, coverage, and delivery speed
Requirements
- Minimum 3+ years building and maintaining automated test frameworks across web, API, and integration layers
- Strong proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript
- Hands-on Playwright test authoring, debugging, and framework maintenance
- Experience testing REST APIs, including contracts, authentication flows, error scenarios, and service integrations
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, including PR gates, regression runs, and continuous feedback loops
- Understanding of risk-based testing, defect lifecycle management, and root cause analysis
- Experience writing structured acceptance criteria, such as Gherkin
- Experience translating acceptance criteria into automated test coverage
- Experience using AI tools such as GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT to produce test artifacts, with judgment in reviewing and owning the output
- Professional proficiency in English, written and verbal
- Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience (preferred)
- Experience with scalable test automation frameworks, such as Page Object Model, shared fixtures, and service layer utilities (preferred)
- Experience with Java and testing Spring Boot services (preferred)
- Familiarity with k6 or JMeter (preferred)
- Experience validating accessibility requirements against WCAG 2.x/AODA standards using tools such as axe-core or Deque (preferred)
- Experience with i18n/l10n test automation and bilingual string key, formatting, and hardcoded-string validation (preferred)
- Exposure to application security testing, including authorization models, injection testing, and OWASP Top 10 (preferred)
- Experience in banking, financial services, or regulated industries, including audit trails, compliance controls, data privacy, and test coverage traceability (preferred)
- Familiarity with Azure cloud services and cloud-based test environments (preferred)
- Experience contributing to QE guilds, shared frameworks, or cross-team quality practices (preferred)
- Professional certification such as ISTQB or CSTE (preferred)
