About the role

  • Protection & Controls Electrical Engineer-in-Training at Qualus focusing on substation protection, control, and metering system designs. Collaborating within a multidisciplinary team for utility projects.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and coordinate the design of protection, control, and metering systems for electrical substations (12 kV to 500 kV) with limited supervision
  • Support and gradually take ownership of key design deliverables, including: One-line diagrams and protection schematics, AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams, Panel layouts and interconnection diagrams, Protection and control design criteria and philosophies
  • Prepare and review engineering documents, including specifications, reports, construction packages, and test plans
  • Assist in developing outage staging plans and commissioning documentation
  • Perform configuration support for protection relays and automation devices
  • Review vendor drawings and technical submissions to ensure alignment with project specifications and design intent
  • Participate in design reviews, Safety by Design sessions, and constructability assessments
  • Provide engineering support during construction and commissioning, including responding to RFIs and participating in site visits and field reviews
  • Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT) and inspections as required
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (civil/structural, electrical layout, telecom, etc.) to ensure coordinated designs
  • Support project delivery by managing assigned tasks within scope, schedule, and budget constraints
  • Demonstrate initiative in taking on increasing responsibility and contributing to technical problem-solving
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement processes
  • Travel to client sites as required during project execution

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized university
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or eligible for / working toward P.Eng. designation
  • 3–5 years of relevant experience in power systems, transmission & distribution, or substation design
  • Familiarity with substation protection and control systems, including relaying schemes and AC/DC designs
  • Exposure to utility standards and industry codes (CSA, IEEE, IEC, Canadian Electrical Code) is an asset
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD; familiarity with protection and controls tools or relay software is an asset
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, clients, and vendors
  • Proven ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary engineering environment
