About the role
- Principal Engineer shaping Bluehost’s Python, Linux, MySQL, Perl, and cPanel hosting platform. Driving reliability, modernization, AI delivery standards, and technical direction for small-business infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Set technical direction and architecture standards for backend and infrastructure systems across the Hosting organization
- Design and evolve large-scale Python backend services running on Linux and backed by MySQL at production scale
- Guide modernization of Perl-based and cPanel-integrated systems without disrupting live customer sites or provisioning automations
- Drive Site Reliability Engineering practices across Hosting
- Partner with DevOps and SRE functions on incident response and system hardening
- Own the organization-wide standard for AI-augmented delivery, including usage, code review, provenance, licensing, customer-data handling, and measurement
- Lead root-cause analysis on complex, high-impact production issues and implement durable architectural fixes
- Mentor senior- and staff-level engineers
- Partner with engineering leadership on multi-quarter technical roadmaps supporting Bluehost's growth
Requirements
- 10+ years of backend/infrastructure engineering experience, including deep, hands-on hosting-platform expertise
- Expert-level Python and Linux systems knowledge at real production scale
- Strong MySQL expertise, including performance tuning, schema design, and large-scale troubleshooting
- Deep hands-on experience in Perl and cPanel environments
- Track record of modernizing legacy systems without breaking them
- Preferred: strong background in Site Reliability Engineering and infrastructure practice
- Experience applying architectural patterns for systemic resilience, fault isolation, and operational governance
- Experience using AI across the delivery lifecycle and selecting appropriate models for different problems
- Experience setting standards for AI-generated code review, provenance, licensing, customer-data handling, adoption, outcomes, security, and compliance
- Proven technical leadership, including setting direction, mentoring engineers, and influencing decisions across multiple teams
- Excellent judgment operating in complex, high-scale, customer-facing SaaS environments under real business pressure
