About the role

  • Senior Manager overseeing OSCIA’s sustainable agriculture research programs and operations. Leading teams, budgets, compliance, applied research delivery and stakeholder partnerships across Ontario agriculture.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, mentorship and performance management to Research department staff
  • Establish roles, responsibilities, priorities and performance expectations; monitor accountability and progress
  • Oversee OSCIA’s portfolio of multiple concurrent externally funded research programs and projects
  • Develop project plans, workplans, dashboards and management tools
  • Coordinate priorities and resources across programs and escalate significant risks and decisions to the Director
  • Lead the design, coordination and delivery of applied research projects addressing soil health, water quality, biodiversity and climate adaptation
  • Support annual and multi-year research planning with the Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer
  • Manage research budgets, staffing and resource allocation
  • Integrate research outcomes into programming, communications and policy engagement
  • Provide scientific leadership in project development, methodology design and outcome measurement
  • Lead forecasting, budget tracking, reconciliation and corrective actions across the Research portfolio
  • Develop and improve systems, processes, templates and standard operating procedures
  • Establish approaches to project management, documentation, reporting, data management and quality assurance
  • Manage operational, financial, contractual, staffing, scheduling, stakeholder, data and delivery risks
  • Ensure compliance with funding agreements, contracts, organizational policies and research requirements
  • Coordinate reports and required submissions; support funding proposals and program development
  • Build relationships with funders, government agencies, academic institutions, research organizations, producers and industry partners
  • Represent OSCIA in meetings, working groups, workshops and industry events
  • Oversee research integrity, data quality, documentation, reproducibility, governance, quality assurance and confidentiality

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in project/program management, business administration, public administration, organizational leadership, agriculture, environmental science, natural resources, research administration or another relevant discipline; equivalent combinations of education and significant relevant management experience considered
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in program, project or operational management
  • Meaningful experience leading people and teams
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects or programs
  • Experience translating agreements, strategies or organizational commitments into operational workplans and staff priorities
  • Experience managing complex budgets, forecasting expenditures and monitoring financial performance
  • Experience establishing project management systems, dashboards, processes, SOPs and operational controls
  • Experience managing grants, contribution agreements or other externally funded arrangements
  • Experience managing contractual obligations, deliverables, reporting deadlines and compliance requirements
  • Experience identifying operational risks and implementing mitigation strategies
  • Experience leading teams through organizational change or staffing transitions
  • Experience managing government, funder, external partner and stakeholder relationships
  • Experience improving organizational systems, workflows and processes
  • Knowledge of sustainable agriculture practices, agri-environmental systems and applied research methodologies
  • Knowledge of funding frameworks, grant management and compliance processes
  • Familiarity with research ethics, data management standards and open science principles
  • Understanding of Ontario’s agricultural landscape, policy environment and sectoral priorities
  • Proficiency in project management, data analytics and reporting tools
  • Financial and budget management skills with attention to compliance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s licence and have access to reliable transportation
  • Must maintain professionalism and confidentiality
