Bare-metal infrastructure engineer building Render’s cloud hardware platform from colocation deployment through fleet automation. Scaling server infrastructure, Kubernetes integration, and operations across thousands of hosts.
Responsibilities
Take Render’s first colocation site from an empty cage to production workloads and scale the foundation to additional sites and thousands of hosts.
Design low-touch server provisioning from loading dock to production, including netboot, imaging, BMC-driven discovery, and host identity.
Partner with network engineering on out-of-band management and production connectivity.
Build the interface for the Kubernetes platform team to request capacity, monitor host health, and coordinate maintenance.
Maintain the fleet’s source of truth for hardware, software, and the physical environment.
Automate the server lifecycle from burn-in and acceptance testing through remediation, staged firmware rollout, and RMA.
Build production-grade automation with safeguards against destructive actions and site-level failures.
Shape the technical and operational direction of the bare metal platform, make build-vs-buy decisions, define operations at scale, and help hire the team.
Requirements
Hands-on experience building and operating automation for bare metal fleets in datacenters or colocation.
Experience with both physical hardware and software-driven fleet management.
Strong Go or Python skills.
Experience designing systems with reconciliation loops and idempotent, failure-tolerant actions.
Ability to debug tools below the abstraction layer.
Experience operating through real failures, such as bad hardware batches, flapping BMCs, or halted rollouts.
Deep Linux knowledge.
Solid networking fundamentals, including DHCP, PXE, DNS, and BGP.
Working knowledge of Kubernetes.
Clear communication, comfort with ambiguity, and willingness to challenge flawed plans.
Nice to have: bare metal fleets at thousands-of-host scale; early-stage datacenter build-outs; hybrid public-cloud/owned-hardware environments; NetBox, Nautobot, Ironic, Metal3, Tinkerbell, or MAAS; reconcilers or state machines for physical infrastructure; component diagnostics, burn-in tooling, firmware, Redfish, or IPMI; internal platforms or APIs; proximity to or ability to regularly visit colocation sites.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States; the position is generally not eligible for new visa sponsorship.
