About the role
- Cloud Engineer automating Azure infrastructure, Kubernetes, and disaster recovery for Smile Digital Health’s FHIR healthcare data platform. Improving delivery speed, reliability, security, and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, operate, and improve production-grade automation for Smile Digital Health, its clients, and partners
- Own build and release engineering by consolidating Azure DevOps pipeline YAML into reusable templates with change detection and automated quality gates
- Replace manual efforts with scheduled, auditable automation for patching, certificate and secret rotation, environment scaling, and recurring reports
- Implement GitOps-based continuous delivery with automated reconciliation, drift detection, and rollback
- Automate end-to-end provisioning and teardown of line-of-business environments across Azure services and applications
- Automate business continuity and disaster recovery through backup validation, restore and failover, recurring DR drills, and measured RTO/RPO
- Maintain upgradeable Helm and Terraform infrastructure through reusable charts, configuration validation, versioned modules, and controlled state boundaries
- Run and harden in-cluster platform services deployed through Helm, including health probes, replica counts, resource limits, and autoscaling
- Maintain Terraform configuration
- Build and maintain Build Agent images
- Automate policy-as-code, security and IaC scanning, alerts, and dashboards
- Implement AI-assisted engineering and contribute to AI enablement through reusable skills and runbooks
- Collaborate with development and operations teams to identify, prioritize, and close automation gaps
- Troubleshoot production and staging issues and document automation for operational use
Requirements
- 6+ years of hands-on cloud engineering, DevOps and/or platform engineering experience
- At least 1-2+ years with infrastructure as code and CI/CD automation on Microsoft Azure in production
- Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Engineering, or similar and/or equivalent work experience
- In-depth knowledge of Terraform, Helm, Azure DevOps pipelines, and GitOps delivery (Argo CD or Flux)
- Strong Terraform skills, including module design, provider version management, state management, and refactoring
- Expertise in Helm chart authoring and refactoring, Kubernetes, and AKS
- Knowledge of Azure services including AKS, Key Vault, Storage, Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, networking, and identity
- Observability as code using Azure Monitor and/or Grafana, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry
- Experience automating backup, restore, and failover with measured RTO and RPO
- Experience with agentic coding tools such as Claude Code or equivalent
- Experience running, hardening, and right-sizing production Kubernetes workloads
- Kafka operations knowledge, including topic and partition design, consumer group sizing, and throughput and latency trade-offs
- Strong Python and Bash skills
- Demonstrable record of replacing manual processes with automation
- FinOps practice and Azure Cost Management, an asset
- Regulated environment experience (healthcare, PHI), an asset
- Certifications such as HashiCorp Terraform Associate, Microsoft AZ-104, AZ-400, AZ-305, CKA, or CKAD, an asset
