About the role
- Principal Software Engineer modernizing Sun Life’s MarTech and customer engagement platforms. Building Snowflake-based, cloud-native, event-driven systems for millions of financial-services clients.
Responsibilities
- Define and execute the technical strategy for customer engagement and marketing technology platforms
- Design and implement capabilities across customer data, audience management, journey orchestration, personalization, decisioning, and channel activation
- Establish reusable platform patterns across business lines
- Champion composable and warehouse-native architectures
- Help establish Snowflake as the foundation of the customer engagement ecosystem
- Develop activation patterns for marketing, digital, service, and advisor experiences
- Define customer data models, identity frameworks, event architectures, and integration standards
- Deliver batch, near real-time, and real-time engagement capabilities
- Design APIs, microservices, and event-driven services connecting marketing, digital, and enterprise systems
- Develop scalable integrations across SaaS platforms, core business systems, mobile applications, and web experiences
- Ensure solutions are secure, resilient, observable, and aligned with enterprise architecture standards
- Partner with Product, Marketing, Architecture, Data Engineering, and Agile teams on platform roadmaps and strategic priorities
- Lead architectural discussions and influence technology decisions
- Evaluate build-versus-buy opportunities, manage technical debt, and identify modernization initiatives
- Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across teams and communities of practice
- Establish best practices for DevSecOps, CI/CD, testing, observability, and release management
- Drive automation and operational efficiencies across engineering teams and platforms
- Foster innovation, continuous improvement, and technical excellence
Requirements
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including experience at a Staff, Principal, or equivalent technical leadership level
- Deep experience designing and implementing enterprise-scale MarTech solutions
- Strong knowledge of Customer Data Platforms (CDPs), journey orchestration, marketing automation, personalization and decisioning, customer identity and consent management, and omnichannel activation
- Experience with Adobe Experience Platform (AEP), Adobe Target, Hightouch, Salesforce Data Cloud, or Braze
- Hands-on experience with Snowflake or modern cloud data platforms
- Expertise in warehouse-native activation and composable architecture patterns
- Strong understanding of customer data models, APIs, integrations, and event-driven architectures
- Familiarity with Kafka, streaming technologies, and modern data ecosystems
- Strong hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, APIs, microservices, Docker, and Kubernetes
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, cloud-native architecture, and engineering best practices
- Ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams and stakeholders
- Strong communication skills and ability to translate complex technical concepts into business outcomes
- Experience mentoring engineers and building high-performing technical teams
- Ability to balance immediate delivery needs with long-term platform strategy
