About the role
- Backend engineer scaling Redis and Valkey cache infrastructure for Affirm’s financial technology platform. Automating operations, migrations and self-service workflows for mission-critical data services.
Responsibilities
- Build and scale Affirm’s Cache Services on Redis and Valkey
- Own cluster migrations end to end and deliver them in phases
- Productionize cache clusters through capacity and shard planning, failover and replication setup, upgrades and staged rollouts
- Automate provisioning, configuration changes and access through audited self-service workflows
- Operate the production fleet by defining SLOs, building alerts and reducing keep-the-lights-on work
- Partner with client teams on caching strategy, including key design, TTLs, consistency and client timeouts
- Break larger projects into tasks and deliver them in multiple phases
- Collaborate with product management, design and analytics on product development decisions and trade-offs
- Create and monitor metrics, escalate issues and support on-call operations
- Participate in growth and development activities, including interviews
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience as a software engineer
- Experience designing, developing and launching backend systems
- Proficiency in Python or Kotlin
- Familiarity with distributed systems, AWS, MySQL, Redis/Valkey, Terraform and Kubernetes
- Production experience with Redis, Valkey or a comparable in-memory store
- Understanding of replication, persistence, cluster mode, eviction and failure modes
- Ability to reason about hit rates, tail latency, hot keys, stampedes and consistency
- Experience automating infrastructure operations with Terraform, Kubernetes and Python
- Experience carrying on-call for a stateful service
- Ability to write clear, well-tested and extensible code across multiple software components
- Comfort navigating large codebases, debugging code and conducting code reviews
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Must reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island or Saskatchewan
