About the role

  • Product Engineer developing and launching manufacturable office furniture products for Tayco, a leading Canadian office furniture manufacturer. Driving design, testing, documentation, supplier coordination, and quality planning.

Responsibilities

  • Develop creative and sound engineering product solutions in response to product directional outlines, manufacturing improvement projects, customer quality claims, and installation issues
  • Incorporate technical advances in manufacturing processes and materials while understanding current supplier capabilities
  • Evolve design concepts through modeling, prototyping, testing, analysis, and iterative optimization of function, appearance, and manufacturing
  • Develop accurate and detailed parts and assembly layouts
  • Cooperate with internal and external stakeholders to address market needs and customer expectations
  • Work with cross-disciplinary project teams to solve product issues involving function, manufacturability, technical application/compatibility, testing, and installation
  • Prepare technical documentation, including assembly and part drawings and specification sheets, using the common database and complying with ISO procedures and internal standards
  • Interpret and ensure compliance with relevant testing requirements, including BIFMA, CGSB, UL, CSA, UBC, and IBC
  • Coordinate fabrication of prototypes and pre-production products for design evolution, testing, showroom, and training
  • Assist with cost analysis by gathering quotes, reviewing material usage, and supporting value engineering
  • Liaise with third-party suppliers to source components or fabrication solutions
  • Conduct design reviews covering drawings, manufacturing process, capability, efficiency, and quality planning
  • Provide documentation and data required for effective product launch into full production
  • Contribute to new processes and tools that improve product development
  • Provide engineering expertise to other departments and support claims and warranty issues
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends, standards, manufacturing, materials, technology, competitive products, engineering practices, environmental issues, and sustainable design
  • Achieve zero defects at launch through quality planning

Requirements

  • Mechanical Engineering degree, diploma or equivalent experience
  • P. Engineering License or Equivalent required
  • 5-7 years engineering experience in a product design and manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge and experience designing for a variety of manufacturing processes and materials (i.e. sheet metal, plastic, glass, wood)
  • Good project and time management skills, experience in handling multiple projects
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong 3D modeling and detail design using Solidworks or other parametric modeling program
  • Familiarity with ANSI/BIFMA standards
  • Experience with Solidworks PDM is preferred
  • Experience with ERP systems for engineering and manufacturing processes is preferred
  • Hands-on experience with prototype and model making
  • Very good communication (verbal and written), presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both in diverse multidisciplinary team environment as well as individually with minimum supervision
