About the role

  • Automation Specialist developing and commissioning PLC, robotics, and drive systems for Tenaris steel manufacturing. Supporting plant safety, troubleshooting, standardized automation solutions, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Develop basic and detailed engineering activities for automation projects autonomously
  • Prepare initial technical proposals and develop automation software
  • Select hardware and provide technical assistance throughout automation project stages
  • Support project coordinators and project leaders in implementing automation projects
  • Develop software according to Tenaris procedures and standards
  • Validate conceptual and basic designs of automatic sequences using software simulation tools
  • Develop standardized solutions for automated sequences to optimize implementation time and costs
  • Technically validate standardized software and hardware solutions
  • Perform commissioning and start-up activities following Tenaris safety procedures and local regulations
  • Provide technical support to stabilize or correct recurring problems in automated machines, lines, processes, and cells
  • Create software backups and archive relevant documents and developed software
  • Stay current with automation techniques and state-of-the-art technologies
  • Comply with Tenaris policies, procedures, management standards, laws, and regulations

Requirements

  • Diploma or degree in a relevant technical field, such as Electrical Engineering, Automation & Robotics, or equivalent
  • 5–10 years of experience in a similar role or managing related projects
  • Strong understanding of Canadian manufacturing safety standards and procedures
  • Experience working in a steel mill or metal manufacturing environment is an asset
  • Strong expertise in PLC programming, troubleshooting, and system integration using Rockwell Automation platforms, including Studio 5000 / Logix 5000 and FactoryTalk
  • Experience with Siemens PLC platforms is an asset
  • Experience with AC and DC motor drives, including configuration, commissioning, and troubleshooting of Rockwell PowerFlex drives and ABB ACS / DCS series drives
  • Hands-on experience with ABB industrial robots, including RAPID programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and integration with PLC control systems and robotic safety systems
  • Experience supporting automation system commissioning, start-up, and troubleshooting in manufacturing environments
  • Ability to diagnose issues across PLCs, drives, robotics, and control networks
  • Familiarity with machine safety systems and standards, including safety PLCs, light curtains, safety relays, Safe Torque Off (STO), and lockout/tagout procedures
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Ability to collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project and Microsoft Office applications is an asset
  • Flexibility to work 8-hour day shifts based on business needs
