About the role
- Principal Engineer shaping cloud-native strategy and architecture at Xero, a platform serving small businesses. Guiding scalable software delivery, technical excellence, and engineering talent across teams.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with multiple engineering teams across the product group to guide, inspire, and elevate technical excellence
- Shape group-wide technical strategy and bridge organizational boundaries
- Partner with senior leaders to turn complex requirements into scalable, resilient software solutions
- Use data-driven decision-making to guide architectural direction and elevate engineering practices
- Mentor technical talent and lead engineers
- Solve large-scale systems challenges while enabling safe, secure, and swift delivery of value to small businesses
- Focus on modern cloud platforms, automated CI/CD pipelines, and microservice architectures
- Refactor legacy services and enhance scalability, performance, and security standards
- Define portfolio-wide technical frameworks, SLOs, and strategies to quantify and address technical debt
- Drive cross-team quality practices to simplify complex engineering workflows
- Communicate nuanced technical concepts to technical teams and executive leaders
- Collaborate within a cross-functional engineering collective comprising product management, architecture, and core delivery teams
- Build robust cloud-native applications and share knowledge through communities of practice
Requirements
- Demonstrated leadership guiding large-scale cloud-native software projects to successful delivery
- Proven success mentoring engineers and fostering inclusive, psychologically safe team environments
- Strong ability to shape long-term architectural vision while balancing technical debt with product delivery
- Expertise automating delivery tooling, establishing quality standards, and refining operational metrics
- Skilled at clearly communicating nuanced technical concepts to technical teams and executive leaders
- Experience with modern cloud platforms
- Experience with automated CI/CD pipelines
- Experience with microservice architectures
- Experience refactoring legacy services
