About the role
- Voluntary Blog Editor commissioning and editing applied ecology posts for British Ecological Society journals. Promoting research and blog content through social media and ecological community networks.
Responsibilities
- Commission or write 2–3 blog posts per month, including posts by authors on recently published articles, blog series, broader pieces on trends or debates, and community-focused pieces
- Proofread and edit commissioned draft posts before publication to ensure quality and alignment with the blog’s style and tone
- Assist with copy-editing and publishing research summaries on an ad-hoc basis
- Attend a monthly online meeting to discuss upcoming plans and develop new blog ideas
- Provide copy for promoting blog posts on social media and actively help promote social media posts
- Promote the journal and blog at relevant conferences, meetings, and workshops when requested
- Work with the journals’ Editorial Offices to identify, commission, and deliver scientifically robust, high-quality blog content
- Receive dedicated training on Canva and WordPress and contribute to journal social media accounts
Requirements
- PhD in ecology or equivalent
- Excellent written English
- Effective and clear communication
- Keen eye for detail
- Good organisational and project management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to network and a willingness to use this when working on topical blog posts
- Ability to identify gaps in current content and devise new initiatives
- Tenacity and self-motivation
- Experience of contributing to a scientific blog or similar desired, but not essential
- Experience with social media desired, but not essential
- Experience with podcasting and video editing desired, but not essential
