About the role

  • Voluntary Blog Editor commissioning and editing applied ecology posts for British Ecological Society journals. Promoting research and blog content through social media and ecological community networks.

Responsibilities

  • Commission or write 2–3 blog posts per month, including posts by authors on recently published articles, blog series, broader pieces on trends or debates, and community-focused pieces
  • Proofread and edit commissioned draft posts before publication to ensure quality and alignment with the blog’s style and tone
  • Assist with copy-editing and publishing research summaries on an ad-hoc basis
  • Attend a monthly online meeting to discuss upcoming plans and develop new blog ideas
  • Provide copy for promoting blog posts on social media and actively help promote social media posts
  • Promote the journal and blog at relevant conferences, meetings, and workshops when requested
  • Work with the journals’ Editorial Offices to identify, commission, and deliver scientifically robust, high-quality blog content
  • Receive dedicated training on Canva and WordPress and contribute to journal social media accounts

Requirements

  • PhD in ecology or equivalent
  • Excellent written English
  • Effective and clear communication
  • Keen eye for detail
  • Good organisational and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to network and a willingness to use this when working on topical blog posts
  • Ability to identify gaps in current content and devise new initiatives
  • Tenacity and self-motivation
  • Experience of contributing to a scientific blog or similar desired, but not essential
  • Experience with social media desired, but not essential
  • Experience with podcasting and video editing desired, but not essential
  • CV and cover letter of no more than 500 words required for application
