Marine mechanical specialist managing life-cycle support, configuration, and technical investigations for Royal Canadian Navy ships. Hybrid role with Thales Canada.
Responsibilities
Perform Life Cycle and Materiel Management functions including equipment obsolescence, material compatibility, alternate part investigations, maintenance management, and disposal management
Support and manage vessel design and configuration control activities, including functional and physical configuration audits and deviations and waivers documentation
Provide technical advice for correct operation and maintenance of auxiliary and mechanical equipment and systems
Monitor systems and equipment performance through UCRs, PIFs, technical investigations, and customer reports
Ensure appropriate spare parts levels throughout system and equipment life cycles and support cataloguing
Conduct technical investigations into marine auxiliary, propulsion, steering, and other mechanical system issues, including failure analysis and solution recommendations
Develop and review equipment specifications, installation and maintenance instructions, test and trials agendas, engineering change documentation, and drawings
Analyze requirements associated with baseline changes to ship configuration, equipment, and software
Liaise with OEMs, service providers, and ship staff to investigate and resolve defects
Prepare documented work scopes for quotations from OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities, and specialist service providers
Prepare and manage work packages and cost estimates for customer approval
Occasionally travel to and work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships, including inspections involving bending, twisting, and working aloft
Requirements
3-year technical program diploma (for Technologists) or 2-year technical program diploma (for Technicians) in a marine mechanical technical field offered by a recognized technical institute; or certified as a technologist or technician by a recognized provincial, state, or federal (national) licensing body in a relevant field or certified body; or certified as RQ-PO1 or RQ-PO2 Marine Technician, QL 6A or 7 Marine Engineer of the Canadian Armed Forces
Minimum 8 years of demonstrated professional work experience in the naval, marine, or offshore industry within the last 15 years
Extensive knowledge of marine auxiliary systems, including Propulsion, Steering Systems, Black and Gray Water, HVAC, and Refrigeration
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Familiarity with safety standards
Strong oral and written communication skills
English (Essential)
Must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for access to controlled technical information under Canadian and/or US export regulations
Must be eligible for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program and able to obtain a Canadian NATO Secret clearance
Preferred: minimum 10 years of experience as a Technical Specialist with marine mechanical systems
Preferred: previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard
Preferred: previous experience as a Life Cycle Materiel Manager in the marine mechanical field
Preferred: familiarity with IPMS, DRMIS, marine in-service support, and Classification Society, SOLAS/IMO, IEEE, CSA, Naval Ship Code, and DND regulations
