About the role

  • Managing seven University of Alberta medical research facilities, including finances, infrastructure, operations, and compliance. Supporting researchers through strategic planning, grants, impact measurement, and safety oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for seven Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry core research facilities
  • Develop policies and implement overall operational strategies
  • Lead financial and business planning, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, reconciliations, payroll, internal controls and compliance
  • Oversee billing, revenue management, user fees and facility rates in Stratocore PPMS
  • Oversee infrastructure acquisition and maintenance, purchasing, inventory and service contract renewals
  • Lead procurement, competitive bidding, capital planning and equipment/software agreements
  • Oversee core facility systems, services, user access, agreements, records, websites and online profiles
  • Coordinate user committees, including terms of reference, agendas, reports, minutes and scheduling
  • Lead staff recruitment, performance processes, annual reporting, impact measurement, seminars, outreach and grant support
  • Liaise with University offices, faculties, institutes, centres, vendors and off-campus clients
  • Set strategic direction for FoMD core research facilities under the Vice-Dean, Research (Basic)
  • Collect data on funding, usage, publications and grant support to measure research impact
  • Support FoMD Canada Foundation for Innovation application, proposal development and internal review processes
  • Facilitate collaboration between researchers and core facilities on infrastructure needs and priorities
  • Oversee health, safety and environmental compliance, staff certifications, hazard assessments and ARISE laboratory registrations
  • Represent core facilities on the FoMD HSE Committee

Requirements

  • MSc, PhD preferred
  • Research experience preferred
  • Minimum five years of experience in a managerial capacity
  • Broad scientific knowledge and experience in a wide range of skills, applications and techniques
  • Experience developing strategies and in report writing
  • Financial management, analysis and reporting skills
  • Superior writing and communication skills
  • Knowledge of administrative structures, policies and procedures within the University of Alberta
  • Knowledge of University of Alberta systems, including PeopleSoft and SupplyNet
  • Strong problem-solving skills and strong critical and analytical abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills to provide advice and direction and establish and maintain effective working relationships for resolving complex, sensitive and confidential issues
  • Thorough knowledge of challenges facing researchers and understanding of the Faculty’s business culture
  • Ability to exercise judgment, tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Superior computer skills, including expertise using Microsoft Office applications and PeopleSoft
  • Ability to submit a resume and cover letter
