About the role
- Senior Backend Software Engineer building scalable APIs, data systems, and experimentation services. Powering customer acquisition, engagement, and personalized experiences for Affirm’s consumer financing platform.
Responsibilities
- Plan and prioritize projects based on product, technical, and business goals using data-driven decision making
- Design and build scalable backend systems, APIs, and data models for communications, experimentation, and personalization
- Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, and Analysts on customer acquisition and engagement strategies
- Establish and uphold engineering best practices for secure, observable, and performant services
- Mentor and support junior engineers
- Create and monitor metrics, escalate issues when needed, and support keep-the-lights-on and on-call efforts
- Build services that improve customer acquisition, engagement, and adoption of Affirm products
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience as a Software Engineer focused on backend systems
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and service-oriented architecture
- Proven track record delivering complex backend systems in production
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in asynchronous communication, including design docs, technical specs, and project plans
- Ability to collaborate across Product, Data Science, Analytics, and Design teams
- Proficiency in Python, Kotlin, or similar languages
- Experience with AWS or other major cloud providers
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience
- Experience with experimentation platforms, including A/B testing frameworks and feature flagging systems
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures and stream processing tools such as Kafka and Kinesis
- Exposure to large-scale personalization, recommendation, or messaging systems
- Ability to support artifact operations and availability through metrics, escalation, and on-call efforts
- Must reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan
