About the role

  • Senior Linux systems specialist supporting client infrastructure for Crafty Penguins, a Canadian Linux, Open Source, DevOps, and Kubernetes consultancy. Managing systems, cloud, containers, networking, patching, and deployments remotely.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with and handle client requests
  • Handle client system alerts
  • Conduct client system patching and health checks
  • Perform deployments using standard operating procedures
  • Onboard new clients and create infrastructure improvement roadmaps
  • Track time for all hours worked
  • Work some after-hours
  • Collaborate with the team and solve client technical problems
  • Maintain strong customer relationships

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of Linux-based operating systems
  • Advanced knowledge of networking
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and DigitalOcean
  • Low-level debugging of Unix-based operating systems and IP-based networking
  • Experience with RHEL- and Debian-based Linux distributions
  • Debugging container-based workloads and runtime tooling including LXC/D, Docker, and Podman
  • Experience with container orchestration systems such as Kubernetes and Docker Swarm
  • Experience with Linux-based hypervisor systems and tooling including KVM, Xen/XCP-ng, and Proxmox
  • Good scripting skills with Bash and Python
  • 5+ years of experience performing the listed duties
  • Willingness to work some after-hours
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • A 2-year technical diploma (CIS or CS) or greater is listed as extra awesome/preferred
  • Experience with Linux consulting or contracting is an asset
  • Experience with ticketing systems such as ConnectWise is an asset
  • Performance tuning, debugging, and clustering of Linux-based database systems and SQL is an asset
  • High-level networking skills including campus/enterprise networking, VLANs, VPNs, managed switches, overlay networks, and dynamic routing protocols are an asset
  • Software development experience is an asset
  • Certifications on AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, or RHEL platforms are an asset
