About the role
- Senior backend engineer building scalable services for Ground News, a platform comparing news sources and media bias. Owning backend features, reliability, and safe production rollouts.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of customer-facing features and products
- Roll out new developments within weeks of joining
- Engage in projects from conception and design through implementation and delivery
- Collaborate with stakeholders to refine solutions
- Operate using lean and agile development approaches
- Collaborate across departments
- Explain technical aspects to non-technical stakeholders and translate their needs into implementable solutions
- Design, build, and operate backend services for Ground News
- Improve observability, reliability, and performance
- Report to the Head of Engineering
- Work with the backend chapter and Core Experience pod
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience with TypeScript, including Async/Await syntax
- At least 3 years of experience with NodeJs
- At least 3 years of experience with relational databases, ideally MySQL/Postgres
- Experience with ElasticSearch, Redis/Valkey, or similar caching system
- Track record of shipping and scaling reliable services for a successful consumer product
- Experience planning and executing safe rollouts, monitoring stability, and mitigating risk
- Strong desire to learn and progress as a developer
- Ability to think critically and make informed decisions
- Ability to write efficient and scalable code and recognize bad patterns
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
