About the role

  • Fire Investigator determining fire causes, documenting losses, and providing expert testimony for Intact’s insurance claims team. Conducting scientific investigations and supporting policyholder claim resolution.

Responsibilities

  • Complete assignments for internal and external adjusters and file handlers, and work with building appraisers
  • Meet with policyholders to understand the circumstances surrounding their claims
  • Investigate loss sites to determine the cause and circumstances of fires
  • Check for explosions, equipment electrical failures, malpractice and other potential causes
  • Document scenes and express and support an opinion on the probable cause of damage
  • Record opinions in writing and provide technical expertise to help resolve claims disputes
  • Participate in joint analysis of specimens related to claim causes
  • Record and manage storage of specimens related to files
  • Recreate sequences of events leading to losses and validate hypotheses using scientific knowledge
  • Produce abridged and detailed reports for serious damages
  • Testify in court and share expert opinions
  • Carry out other related tasks

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of buildings, construction methods, heat transfer and the laws governing fire propagation
  • Ability to understand and identify the root cause of damage and rule out other possible causes through investigation and research
  • Ability to recreate the sequence of events leading to a loss and validate it with up-to-date scientific knowledge
  • Ability to apply the scientific method by validating assumptions and testing scenarios
  • Over 10 years of relevant experience investigating the origin and causes of fires
  • A technical college diploma, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience, is required
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide short but detailed reports or detailed reports for significant losses
  • Ability to testify in court and present expert opinions
  • Experience in insurance and as an expert before the courts is a major asset
  • Must hold or be able to obtain CFI, CFEI, CFVI or WETT certification
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada from the anticipated start date and throughout employment
  • Ability to maintain work eligibility in Canada
