About the role

  • Hardware Engineering Lead responsible for leading design activities for naval communication systems. Collaborating with mechanical and electrical engineers in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and estimate hardware engineering work-scope for projects
  • Ensure effective prioritization and assignment of tasks amongst the hardware engineering and drafting teams and follow up to verify timely completion and adequate quality for engineering work products
  • Become familiar with hardware related requirements including environmental and human factors requirements
  • Develop designs for shipboard electronics cabinets, enclosures and assemblies
  • Develop rugged designs that incorporate off-the-shelf electronics and equipment
  • Support the selection of hardware components for system designs
  • Develop evidence portfolios to substantiate design compliance with allocated requirements – eg. weight and power budgets, thermal analyses, shock and vibration analysis
  • Ensure designs can be built and provide support to investigate and resolve design issues identified during build, integration and testing
  • Write and/or review technical contents for documentation deliverables
  • Plan and manage the budget and resources allocated for hardware engineering activities
  • Contribute to process improvements

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience
  • Competency to practice engineering in electrical and/or mechanical engineering disciplines
  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering design for shipboard electronics cabinets and distributed communication equipment and assemblies
  • Ability to interpret standards and apply them to the design process
  • Experience working in the defence sector
  • Experience ruggedizing off-the-shelf equipment
  • Familiarity with 2D and 3D CAD tools
  • Practical knowledge using computational models (eg. ANSYS) and ability to interpret modeling results
  • Familiarity with Military Standards and/or other design standards related to hardware design
  • Knowledge of voice and data communication, radio communication, and/or satellite communication systems
  • Experience leading an engineering or technical team
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or other relevant professional certification
  • Must be eligible for registration with the Controlled Goods Program; Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a government of Canada Reliability status and Secret Level 2/NATO Secret security clearance; Must be eligible to meet the requirements for U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
