About the role

  • Senior Staff Performance Engineer optimizing JVM performance, Linux systems, and Kubernetes infrastructure. Improving scalability, latency, and costs for Nu, a Latin American digital bank.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex, high-level performance investigations across a global JVM-based microservices architecture
  • Identify and resolve systemic bottlenecks
  • Drive initiatives to reduce infrastructure costs and latency by tuning JVM parameters, garbage collection, and memory management
  • Build advanced observability and diagnostic tooling using eBPF, JFR, and Flamegraphs
  • Optimize Linux kernel and JVM alignment, including thread scheduling and resource isolation in Kubernetes
  • Design and deliver scalable infrastructure improvements that address long-term performance challenges
  • Share JVM internals and performance expertise with the Engineering team and mentor others
  • Diagnose concurrency issues, lock contention, and memory leaks, providing definitive fixes
  • Collaborate with the Computing Squad to align orchestration strategies with system performance goals
  • Deep dive into prioritized problems to identify root causes

Requirements

  • Deep, low-level knowledge of JVM internals, including JIT compilation (C1/C2), class loading, and intrinsic methods
  • Extensive experience with GC algorithms (ZGC, G1, Shenandoah), including tuning them for massive heaps and ultra-low latency requirements
  • Previous experience contributing to the OpenJDK project or other low-level runtime environments is a significant advantage
  • Deep understanding of the Linux Scheduler (CFS/EEVDF), thread scheduling, and kernel management of high-concurrency Java workloads
  • Mastery of heap and off-heap memory management, including Direct Buffers, memory-mapped files, and diagnosing complex memory leaks
  • Mastery of Flamegraphs, JFR (Java Flight Recorder), eBPF, and large-scale heap dump analysis
  • Extensive experience with cgroups and CPU throttling impact on JVM quotas within Kubernetes/EKS
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex concurrency problems, including lock contention and race conditions at the instruction level
  • Knowledge of AWS infrastructure and its performance characteristics
  • Experience developing and delivering innovative solutions for medium- and long-term team-level or project-level challenges
  • Understanding of the technical aspects, capabilities, and limitations of systems
  • Ability to anticipate technical and product issues and make appropriate design decisions
  • Enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and mentoring others
  • At least 4 years of experience in a Staff, Senior Staff, or Principal Engineer role
  • Availability to work onsite two to three days per week
  • Legal authorization to work in the country where the position is located
