About the role

  • Senior Java backend engineer building scalable healthcare platform services for Praia Health. Owning APIs, EMR integrations, cloud infrastructure, and platform architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, build, and scale core Java backend services powering Praia's consumer experience and platform ecosystem
  • Develop and maintain JavaScript components, UI workflows, and client-side integration hooks
  • Build and operate enterprise integration services for EMRs, including Epic/MyChart, using HL7 FHIR APIs and modern interoperability patterns
  • Leverage Databricks and Apache Spark to build or support data pipelines, workflows, and analytical workloads when needed
  • Develop and maintain secure REST and event-driven APIs with OAuth2/OIDC authentication and authorization, auditing, and least-privilege controls
  • Author developer documentation, OpenAPI specifications, and runbooks
  • Own CI/CD pipelines, automated unit/integration/E2E testing, infrastructure-as-code, structured logging, and incident response
  • Partner with Product, Design, and partner-facing teams to translate technical requirements into robust solutions
  • Work closely with engineering leadership to deliver resilient software at a steady, well-defined pace
  • Establish end-to-end architectural ownership of Praia's platform

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience building and operating production software
  • Demonstrated senior-level scope and clear ownership of distributed, high-throughput systems
  • Expert-level software development skills in Java and the modern Java ecosystem
  • Experience with Quarkus or Spring Boot, concurrency, and microservices
  • Strong working knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and modern client-side architectures
  • Experience integrating with EMR/EHR systems and healthcare interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR), or equivalent heavily regulated-sector experience such as FinTech
  • Experience delivering cloud-native services using AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • Experience with Kubernetes/Docker and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform
  • Deep understanding of OAuth2, OIDC, mTLS, JWT, secrets management, and secure SDLC practices
  • Hands-on experience with modern observability tooling, including metrics, distributed tracing, APM, and log aggregation
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to write technical design documents and articulate architecture trade-offs
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • Must permanently reside in the United States or Canada
  • Must be currently authorized to work full-time in the United States or Canada
