About the role

  • Internal Investigator managing workplace investigations related to harassment and discrimination. Ensuring procedural fairness and promoting a respectful workplace culture in Peel Region.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and manage investigations into allegations of workplace harassment, discrimination, bullying, retaliation, and violations of the Region’s Respect in the Workplace policies and procedures.
  • Conduct preliminary fact-finding, complaint threshold assessments, and triage of concerns to determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Develop investigation plans, including scope, timelines, witness identification, and evidence-gathering strategies.
  • Interview complainants, respondents, witnesses, and other relevant parties using effective investigative and active listening techniques.
  • Gather, review, and assess relevant evidence including emails, text messages, personnel files, performance records, and other documentation.
  • Analyze information, assess credibility, and apply procedural fairness principles to determine findings of fact.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and confidential records throughout all stages of the investigative process.
  • Prepare comprehensive, objective, and well-reasoned investigation reports outlining allegations, evidence, findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Promote and support early resolution and mediation approaches where appropriate.
  • Provide neutral, unbiased, and confidential support to employees and leaders involved in workplace investigations, including explaining investigative processes and responding to inquiries.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources, Legal Services, leadership teams, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of training and awareness programs related to Respect in the Workplace, workplace investigations, and related policies.
  • Remain current on relevant employment and human rights legislation, case law, emerging trends, and best practices in workplace investigations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Law, or a related field preferred.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., HR designation) are considered an asset.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience conducting workplace investigations, preferably within a unionized environment.
  • Experience in employment law or human rights law is highly desirable.
  • Thorough understanding of employment law, human rights legislation, workplace investigation methodologies, and procedural fairness principles.
  • Strong knowledge of legislation governing workplace harassment, discrimination, and respectful workplace practices, with the ability to interpret and apply relevant case law and legislative requirements.
  • Exceptional investigative, analytical, and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to assess complex information and arrive at sound, defensible conclusions.
  • Strong interviewing, facilitation, conflict resolution, and active listening skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear, concise, detailed, and objective investigation reports.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish credibility and build rapport with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive and contentious issues with professionalism, discretion, and good judgment.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple investigations simultaneously, and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
