About the role
- Director of Finance leading accounting, compliance, budgeting, and financial strategy for The Salvation Army. Advising mission leaders and overseeing finance operations across Canada and Bermuda.
Responsibilities
- Manage a regional financial accounting and advisory services group for The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda
- Lead financial accounting and advisory services across multiple operating entities
- Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, financial controls, and chart of accounts standards
- Monitor financial health, performance, risks, and long-term sustainability of operating units
- Conduct financial reviews and analyze key performance indicators
- Collaborate with leadership to develop and implement corrective action plans
- Provide strategic financial advice to mission leaders and stakeholders
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, variance analysis, and performance monitoring
- Oversee financial reporting, account reconciliations, and month-end and year-end processes
- Manage internal and external audits, regulatory filings, charitable and tax returns, and financial statement preparation
- Support cash flow management, capital projects, government funding initiatives, and stakeholder reporting
- Supervise, mentor, and develop finance staff while promoting continuous improvement
Requirements
- Completion of an undergraduate degree in Accounting or a related discipline
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required
- Five to seven (5-7) years of progressive accounting, finance, or business management experience, including leadership responsibility for budgeting, financial management, and operational oversight
- Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience, with the ability to coach, mentor, and develop high-performing teams
- Extensive knowledge of accounting principles, financial management practices, and financial reporting requirements, including regulatory compliance and audit processes
- Experience developing solutions to complex business and financial challenges, managing large-scale initiatives, and exercising sound judgment with a high degree of independence
- Strong understanding of integrated business systems, automated workflows, and accounting technologies, including cloud-based and web-enabled applications
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial analysis tools
- Ability to interpret, analyze, and present complex financial information
- Excellent written and verbal communication, stakeholder engagement, and customer service skills
- Non-profit sector experience, including reporting to government agencies and external funders, considered an asset
