Aquatic animal health veterinarian supporting Nova Scotia’s aquaculture industry through disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
Developing fish health surveillance programs and advising aquaculturists across provincial sites.
Responsibilities
Provide aquatic animal veterinary medicine to populations reared on regulated aquaculture sites in Nova Scotia
Assist in developing and implementing provincial fish health surveillance and management programs under the Nova Scotia Aquaculture Management Regulations
Provide rapid disease diagnosis, treatment, and preventative management recommendations for aquatic animal populations
Consult with aquaculturists on emergency and general population health issues
Apply provincial aquatic animal health policy and regulations
Work with provincial and national officials to develop health surveillance programs
Conduct work for provincial aquatic animal health surveillance programs, including extensive travel throughout Nova Scotia
Communicate findings and recommendations to aquaculturists, designated veterinarians, provincial and federal aquatic animal health colleagues, and laboratory personnel
Work in aquaculture site field settings and laboratory settings
Participate in on-call duty and work overtime when required
Requirements
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
Eligible to practice veterinary medicine in Nova Scotia through licensure with the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association
Experience in aquatic animal medicine
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work effectively within a team
Computer literacy
Valid driver’s license
Capable of extensive travel
Ability to work in remote areas, on the water around fish farms and boats
Ability to work extended hours
Availability for on-call duty
Successful completion of applicable background checks and credential confirmation
