About the role
- Senior Java Developer building Java microservices and distributed systems for Just Eat Takeaway.com’s global delivery platform. Owning scalable logistics infrastructure, APIs, AWS deployment, and reliability.
Responsibilities
- Architect, develop, and operate core services and distributed systems powering delivery areas and fees calculations
- Own backend systems end-to-end, from system architecture and API design through deployment, observability, and performance optimization
- Maintain existing and develop new Java 21 microservices
- Extend existing applications based on business requests
- Maintain and develop AWS infrastructure resources using Terraform
- Design, build, and maintain high-performance, scalable backend services and APIs using Java
- Participate in architectural decisions, RFCs, and technical design reviews across the Logistics domain
- Collaborate with Product, QE, and Data colleagues to ship high-quality releases on a continuous delivery cadence
- Own work throughout the product development lifecycle from technical design and planning to market release
- Review peers’ code
- Support and mentor team members and help grow backend engineering as a discipline
- Identify improvements, highlight risks versus benefits, and translate them into technical requirements
- Work with the product team to design the future of products
- Participate in a paid on-call rotation
- Help shape the technical direction of backend engineering within the organization
Requirements
- 7+ years of hands-on experience architecting and building scalable, high-performance enterprise applications and leading complex software development projects
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including data structures, design patterns, testing, and debugging
- Solid understanding of consuming, producing, and designing RESTful web services
- Experience with Java, including Spark or Quarkus framework
- Experience with streams and list operations is a nice-to-have
- Design patterns for distributed systems, including bounded contexts, sagas, eventual consistency, and the outbox pattern (must have)
- Experience in Domain-Driven Design (DDD) is a strong nice-to-have
- Experience with message brokers such as Kafka, Amazon SQS, and RabbitMQ
- Production experience deploying to AWS and running services on Kubernetes (EKS)
- Experience with system logging and monitoring using Grafana, AWS CloudWatch, and DataDog
- Experience with data persistence in relational, MySQL, unstructured, and/or cached forms
- Strong experience with Redis is a plus
- Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform is nice-to-have
- Understanding of continuous delivery, deployment, and integration
- Familiarity with Version Control using Git and related tools
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, or similar is required
- Experience making repositories agent-ready, maintaining clear in-repo documentation, AGENTS.md / CLAUDE.md files, structured code conventions, and reproducible local setups
- Experience using AI agents for code generation, refactoring, debugging, and automated PR workflows
- Experience integrating AI into backend engineering workflows
- Understanding of prompt engineering and evaluation of AI-generated outputs in a software engineering context
- Awareness of best practices for AI-driven development, including reliability, reproducibility, security, and governance
