About the role

Senior backend engineer building scalable lakehouse infrastructure for Affirm’s pay-over-time platform. Leading distributed data systems, reliability, technical standards, and engineering delivery.

Responsibilities

Own and deliver quarterly goals for the team
Lead engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems
Support team members throughout delivery
Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics during product development
Participate in ideation and articulate technical constraints
Partner on decisions considering risks and trade-offs
Identify and lead resolution of project, process, technology, and business issues
Support operations and availability of team artifacts
Create and monitor metrics, escalate when needed, and support on-call efforts
Set and improve code review and design standards
Advocate for engineering standards through writing and tech talks
Develop team talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example

4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale
Experience using languages such as Python or Kotlin
Track record developing highly available distributed systems
Experience with AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes
Experience scaling Iceberg, Flink, Airflow, Spark, Kafka, Snowflake, and Terraform
Experience defining technical plans for significant features or system components
High-quality coding skills with elegant, simple, and extensible design
Proficiency making significant changes in a large codebase safely
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
Candidate must reside in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan
