About the role
- Assistant Photo Editor assigning and editing photography for The Globe and Mail, a Canadian news organization. Packaging visual stories across digital and print platforms.
Responsibilities
- Assign, research, edit and package photography for digital and print platforms
- Work with photographers to shape story ideas from start to finish
- Apply strong news judgment under daily deadline pressures
- Work independently and collaboratively within the multidisciplinary visuals team
- Collaborate with designers, developers, photo editors, data journalists and graphic artists
- Contribute to long-term investigative projects, breaking news and immersive story formats
- Advocate within the newsroom for the power and value of visuals in journalism
- Improve processes and workflows in an evolving media environment
Requirements
- Experience as a photo editor for a media organization, or equivalent experience and a proven track record as a photojournalist
- Strong, confident understanding of the legal and ethical underpinnings of photojournalism in a digital age
- Excellent judgement for what makes a good visual story, including technical and aesthetic details, pacing and story structure
- Ability to evaluate and give feedback on a wide range of freelance pitches and story ideas
- Strong understanding of the technical aspects of photography
- Ability to clearly communicate photography requirements to other visual journalists
- Conversant on trends in digital journalism, including the role of visuals across distributed platforms like Instagram and Apple News
- Understanding of digital and print design principles is an asset
- Availability for some evening and weekend work
- Must include a cover letter written by the applicant, not AI
