Responsibilities
Help lead and manage the photo team, including assignments, feedback and professional development
Oversee daily photo coverage across breaking news, features, major news events and long-term projects
Work with assigning editors throughout the newsroom on priority files and photography-driven journalism opportunities
Develop assignments and visual approaches with photo editors and photographers from conception through publication
Make editorial decisions under deadline pressure while maintaining journalistic, ethical and technical standards
Support development of The Globe’s freelance photography network
Evaluate pitches and identify new freelance talent
Help build a freelance photographer roster reflecting the communities and country covered
Improve workflows, processes and communication across the photo team and wider newsroom
Advocate for photography and visual storytelling during story planning
Report to the Head of Photo and Video
Collaborate with photographers, photo editors, designers, developers, data journalists and graphic artists across breaking news, daily reporting, investigations, features and digital storytelling
Requirements
5+ years of experience working as a photo or visuals assigning editor in a newsroom, or equivalent experience
Previous experience leading, managing and developing journalists, teams or significant editorial projects
Excellent judgment for what makes a strong visual story, from technical and aesthetic details to pacing and story structure
Proven ability to work with photographers and editors to develop assignments and strengthen story ideas
Strong, confident understanding of the legal and ethical underpinnings of photojournalism in a digital age
Ability to evaluate and give constructive feedback on a wide range of freelance pitches and story ideas
Strong understanding of the technical aspects of photography and image production
Ability to clearly communicate photography and image-production requirements to other visual journalists
Experience commissioning and working with freelance photographers
Conversant on trends in digital journalism, including the role of visuals across digital, mobile, social and distributed platforms
Strong communication and collaboration skills
Ability to build relationships across a newsroom
Understanding of digital and print design principles is an asset
Position includes some evenings and weekend work
Must work in the Toronto office a minimum of three days a week
