About the role
- Assistant Photo Editor assigning and editing photography for The Globe and Mail’s digital and print journalism. Shaping visual stories across breaking news, investigations, and immersive formats.
Responsibilities
- Assign, research, edit, and package photography for digital and print platforms
- Work with photographers to shape story ideas from start to finish
- Collaborate with designers, developers, photo editors, data journalists, and graphic artists
- Contribute to long-term investigative projects, breaking news, and immersive story formats
- Advocate within the newsroom for the power and value of visuals in journalism
- Improve processes and workflows in an evolving media environment
- Work independently and collaboratively under daily deadline pressures
Requirements
- Experience as a photo editor for a media organization, or equivalent experience and a proven track record as a photojournalist
- Strong understanding of the legal and ethical underpinnings of photojournalism in a digital age
- Excellent judgement for evaluating visual stories, including technical and aesthetic details, pacing, and story structure
- Ability to evaluate and provide feedback on freelance pitches and story ideas
- Strong understanding of the technical aspects of photography
- Ability to clearly communicate photography requirements to other visual journalists
- Familiarity with trends in digital journalism and the role of visuals across distributed platforms such as Instagram and Apple News
- Understanding of digital and print design principles is an asset
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends
