- Assistant Photo Editor assigning and editing photography for The Globe and Mail’s digital and print journalism. Shaping visual stories across breaking news, investigations and immersive formats.
Responsibilities
- Assign, research, edit and package photography for digital and print platforms
- Work with photographers to shape story ideas from start to finish
- Apply strong news judgment under daily deadline pressures
- Edit photography using strong technical editing skills
- Collaborate with designers, developers, photo editors, data journalists and graphic artists
- Contribute to long-term investigative projects, breaking news and immersive story formats
- Advocate within the newsroom for the power and value of visuals in journalism
- Improve processes and workflows in an evolving media environment
- Evaluate and provide feedback on freelance pitches and story ideas
Requirements
- Experience as a photo editor for a media organization, or equivalent experience and a proven track record as a photojournalist
- Strong, confident understanding of the legal and ethical underpinnings of photojournalism in a digital age
- Excellent judgement for what makes a good visual story, from technical and aesthetic details to pacing and story structure
- Ability to evaluate and give feedback on a wide range of freelance pitches and story ideas
- Strong understanding of the technical aspects of photography
- Ability to clearly communicate photography requirements to other visual journalists
- Conversant on trends in digital journalism, including the role of visuals across distributed platforms like Instagram and Apple News
- Understanding of digital and print design principles is an asset
- Willingness to work some evenings and weekends
- Minimum of two days a week in the Toronto office
